We are seeking a Maritime/Shipping Transactions Lawyer with particular expertise in transactional work such as ship sales and purchases (S&P), newbuild contracts, ship finance, charters, and related commercial agreements.
You will play a key role in advising clients on complex shipping transactions, structuring deals, managing risk, and ensuring compliance with relevant maritime regulations.
Key tasks:
- Draft, review, and negotiate contracts related to:
- Ship sale and purchase (S&P)
- Shipbuilding and repair contracts
- Bareboat, time, and voyage charters
- Ship finance and leasing arrangements
- Joint ventures and M&A involving shipping assets
- Provide legal advice on flagging, registration, mortgage, and delivery procedures.
- Conduct due diligence on vessels, ownership structures, and transaction counterparties.
- Handle and manage contentious maritime matters, including, Charterparty and bill of lading disputes, Cargo damage, delay, and misdelivery claims, Collisions, groundings, salvage, and general average, Ship arrest and enforcement actions, Crew claims and employment-related disputes, Insurance claims (P&I, H&M, FD&D)
- Advise on international maritime conventions, sanctions compliance, and environmental regulations.
- Liaise with classification societies, registries, banks, brokers, and P&I Clubs as needed.
- Support clients with closing and post-closing documentation and processes.
- Provide strategic input to clients and internal stakeholders in structuring transactions.
Requirements:
- Qualified lawyer with 10 + PQE in maritime/shipping transactions.
- Strong academic background in law; additional qualifications in maritime law (e.g., LLM) are an advantage.
- Demonstrable experience with high-value shipping transactions across multiple jurisdictions.
- Familiarity with standard industry documents (e.g., BIMCO forms, MOAs, loan agreements).
- Excellent drafting, negotiation, and client communication skills.
