This is a senior role with the focus on managing and resolving contentious shipping matters, including charterparty disputes, cargo claims, collisions, marine insurance issues, and regulatory investigations.
Key tasks:
- Handle and manage all contentious maritime matters, including:
- Charterparty and bill of lading disputes
- Cargo damage, delay, and misdelivery claims
- Collisions, groundings, salvage, and general average
- Ship arrest and enforcement actions
- Crew claims and employment-related disputes
- Insurance claims (P&I, H&M, FD&D)
- Instruct and manage external counsel in multiple jurisdictions, ensuring cost-effective litigation strategy.
- Liaise with insurers, P&I Clubs, and brokers in handling claims and ensuring timely reporting and documentation.
- Conduct internal investigations into incidents and provide legal guidance to operational teams.
- Review incident reports and advise on evidence preservation and legal risk.
- Assist with regulatory and compliance matters involving maritime law, sanctions, and environmental breaches.
Requirements:
- Qualified lawyer with 15+ years PQE, preferably gained at a maritime law firm or within the legal department of a shipping company, insurer, or P&I Club.
- Fluent English; multilingual skills are an advantage
- Solid experience in shipping litigation and arbitration.
- Strong understanding of charterparties, bills of lading, INCOTERMS, and relevant conventions (Hague-Visby, Rotterdam Rules, etc.).
- Experience dealing with international jurisdictions and multi-party claims.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with strong negotiation and dispute resolution capabilities.
- Comfortable working independently and under pressure in a fast-paced, global environment.
